Haha… K, (i know this sounds painful and it kind of is but its worth it) put nail polish remover on it… Get like a Q tip or one of those little circle thingys and just keep applying the nail polish remover for awhile if you have nothing to do tonight… It’ll heal it up really fast! I hope this helps you, because i get colds sores alot, i feel your pain…

I have a cold sore on the side of me lip. i got it on Monday and it is now Thursday. By now it seems to be healed in the sense that the blisters are pretty much gone. Now it is red and scabby with a greenish grey puss/skin coming from it. I have been doing many treatments up to this point (ice, Campho phenique, Lysene, nail polish remover, etc). Should I continue to put these treatments on the semi-healed scab?
Abreva or Herpicin would be better for this area because some of the stuff you are using is not intended to be used on facial skin and that is why it probably looks like it does. Hydrocortisone cream which almost everyone has in their house will also dry this up. A normal cold sore takes an average of 2 weeks to heal up.

Yogurt is a good way to get rid of cold sores–it feels really good too, better than Carmex or Campho Phenique (which I think is too drying). Apply your favorite yogurt flavor to the spot several times a day–I promise it works!!

Getting rid of cold sore scab?

Hello!
So, on wednesday I woke up with one bloody heck of an outbreak.
I had one medium sore on my bottom lip, a cluster of little ones on my top lip (spreading out onto my skin), and a small sore in between my nose and mouth.
I freeeeaked out. Grabbed the abreva, even iced them while I was at school, but nothing was changing. In fact, they were getting worse.
By thursday they had grown enough to cause concern, we went to the doctors and I was prescribed some cold sore pill, I forgot the name.
I also started taking Lysine, along with the pill and abreva.
Yesterday (Friday) not much had changed, I was still get the “ughhhs” and “oooohs” from my family at how ugly it was. Then I realized, oh man!
My boyfriend is coming to visit from out of town in 1 week, and I need these things GONE!!
So in desperation I did some online searching, was very unsure about the suggestion but finally said screw it. I iced them one at a time for 15 mins, doused in nail polish remover, let dry, iced, doused in hydrogen peroxide. I did that twice with each one and finally went to bed. This morning i ran to the mirror and, WOW!!!!!! They have visibly shrunk in size, and are no longer bubbles, but flat scabs.
I’m super pleased with the results, but now kind of at a loss. What am I supposed to do now? Keep doing the nail polisher remover and hydrogen peroxide treatment? Or whatt?

The main thing I’m concerned about is if the scabs are going to leave a scar, or if they’ll be healed by next saturday…cuz man, these things were HUGE! Haven’t seen my boyfriend in 3 weeks and kissing him with no pain would be nice >_<

I’m sure this has been answered somewhere, but all I could find were the tips I already knew. Plus this is urgent. xD

Any tips for how to heal the scabs without leaving marks, and also in a speedy fashion? (so i can be kissable in 7 days ;D)

I heard neosporin works tremendously, but it seems to me like the moisture would bring the sores back? I honestly don’t know, that’s why I ask. I’ve been getting cold sores since I can remember. Unfortunately my family’s view on it is “Just let it run it’s course”. I think that’s because they’ve never heard of these fabulous methods! Haha.

Thanks ahead of time, any tips or tricks will be MAJORLY appreciated.
Woo!
Sounds like I’m going to try a little neosporin, and maybe honey.

I’ll let you know what the results are

The sores were cause by a virus not moisture, if you don’t want to scar you need to put something on your skin to soften the tissue and soothe the area. I would recommend either unheated or organic aloe or a small amount of neosporin. When the scabs are ready to come off you will know, pull them off too early and you will have some big red scars there for a while. Vitamin’s A and C help heal skin so look for a cream or serum with that in it to help heal the skin and prevent scarring.

ZOVIREX~
100 dollars a tube. Covered by medicaid and all other insurances.
Other wise 10 days to healing … Not infectious after the scab is complete. Do not pull on it.
Keep it very moist or it DOES crack and bleed. And then “TA~DA” it will re- scab and re -bleed. You have a form of herpes. Keep your mouth to your self. Do not kiss babies or anyone else.keep your hands away from your eyes… Herpes spreads SOOOOOOO fast. And you don’t want one in your eye. I hope this helps I feel sorry for you I get them too. Someone kissed me as a baby. They come out in times of stress. I know now if I am stressed out or have a FEVER…. Put some zovirex on… Just in case and I wont get one lol!

How to treat the common cold…?

I’m 13 years old, and home alone until 10 this evening. (It’s 5:00 p.m. now.) For the last few days, I have been feeling under the weather, and three days ago I came down with a fever and chills and spent the day sleeping. However, after that incident, I have been feeling markedly better. Today, though, I have been feeling rather ill again. I have a sore throat, a headache, a bit of an upset stomach and am very tired. (My upset stomach doesn’t make me feel like throwing up, it just makes food sound rather unapatizable.) I have several chores I need to get done today and also I need to prepare for day 1 of school tommorow, which I can’t skip no matter how ill I am feeling. Earlier, I had some hot chocolate for my throat and watched a bit of TV, and afterwards I took a long, hot shower. However, now I feel a bit less tired but also slightly feverish. What would you suggest?
P.S. I really am 13, though people often tell me I sound older in typing. Just in case you were wondering.

Just rest and relax. Drink lots of liquids to flush your system, OJ, Tea, Gatorade, Powerade, Water, or just anything you can get down. Also soup helps. Ramen noodles or chicken noodle soup, you may have some of these in your pantry. Or try warming up some chicken broth. I like popcicles and icecream for my throat if it is sore. Just try to sleep out your cold. Feel better soon!

What is wrong with me??? PLEASE PLEASE ANSWER… I’m sorry it’s really long, but ya… just please help!! ?

This is my first question, ever! So please be nice to me and not give me any mean stuff like “Do the right category” or random junk like that, ok??? Ok! So, I’m the type of person who never gets sick! I mean really, never, not even a cold or anything. So this is bugging me like crazy… Anyway, Thursday I woke up early with a little sharp pain in the top, right, back side of my throat. I had to give a speech that day so I just took some ibuprofen and I was fine for the rest of the day. Then, I woke up Friday, and I felt somewhat sick. I sat on my bed wondering what is could be for like 10 min and then my mom came in and asked what’s wrong. I told her I felt sick, so she took my temp. One ear was 100.3 and the other was 99.9. My eyes also looked a little glassy (when I am sick my eyes get this glassy look like there’s a glass lens in my eyes or something) and she made me stay home from school. She gave me some ibuprofen to help lower the very small fever. Throughout the morning I felt perfectly fine, my head was just a little hot, but the ibuprofen helped that. For breakfast I just ate some cheese and crackers, and for lunch, I had some tomato soup. Later, like at 4:00, I had a cheeseburger from Dairy Queen, as that’s the only thing that sounded somewhat good. Then at supper time, I didn’t eat anything because I was just full. At around 7:00, my head started to feel really hot, so I took my temp. I think it was 102 and 101. Then my throat just started getting all sore again, but this time it was all over the back. I went to the bathroom to look at it, but I didn’t find any white spots or red spots or anything at that matter. Later, about 8:30 or 9:00 my throat was KILLING me, so I looked again, this time at my tonsils (I think they were my tonsils but I honestly have no clue). I’m pretty sure they were slightly swollen and kinda bumpy (red bumps… no white stuff what-so-ever). Then I started to lose my voice. I am not kidding when I say this but I have never lost my voice in my entire life, and I scream a lot. So I know it’s not from talking too much or whatnot. Around 10:00 I took my temp again and it was normal (like 98 and 99 or something like that). But my throat REALLY HURT and it really hurt to talk too. Then, I started to cough, and I coughed a lot. Every time I did, it burned my throat so badly, so I tried drinking water. It helped some, but not a lot. Then, while coughing like a maniac, I almost threw up, I had had enough of this, and so I just washed my face & brushed my teeth & went to bed. This morning (Saturday), I woke up and checked my temp. It was about 98* so I knew the fever was completely gone, but my throat was slightly burning. I got on the computer and looked up how to treat sore throats, and I tried a few of the suggestions. None of them worked. Then, I just got a water bottle and filled it up with milk and drank the whole thing. Then… I saw you weren’t supposed to drink milk when you have a sore throat, and I’m like “O crap…” So then I started looking up sore throats and saw this disease called tonsillitis. I looked it up on Google, and the pix looked just like my throat, minus any white spots. So I checked my throat again, and this time it looked perfectly normal! (This is what got me seriously confused) I wasn’t sure what the heck I had then. Then I just looked up what other people asked about sore throats on here, and I found nothing that matched me. It just kills me to talk or even whisper, and haven’t eaten anything today because it just hurts so much to swallow but I’m just soooo hungry!! …..I’m taking my temp…… BLAH! Its 99.7. ….other ear…. Same thing… 99.7. So I guess that’s normal, right? Ah, poop… & my throat burns even though I’m not talking at all… & ya… I have no clue what’s wrong with me, so if you read the whole thing, your truly a nice and caring person… or your just bored and enjoy reading about other people in pain… either way… if you have ANY advice on what is wrong with my or what I can do about it… please please tell me!!

O! fyi: I’m 13, a couple weeks from being 14, and I’m a girl. I still have my tonsils and I’ve never ever ever had any problem what so ever with them before, so I really don’t think there the problem… Also, like I said before, I never ever get sick, so I’m gonna be new to most of the stuff you people are about to say…

& btw: Please don’t just say “go to the Dr” I’m terrified Dr’s… Especially when I have a sore throat because when I was little I used to “get strep throat” but every test came back negative. I also don’t enjoy the Dr. shoving a swab in the back of my throat, but who does?! But I would rather do anything than go 2 the Dr…

Please please please help me!!
o & i forgot to say this… its Saturday so there’s no Dr. offices open until like Monday… so ya… & I just drank some juice & I feel slightly better. My throat is burning anymore…

I’m not a doctor, but to me it sounds like you have tonsillitis. This si basically swelling of the tonsils as they are infected and can cause really bad sore throats. It also cause you to have a high temperature. It should get better in the next two days or so, but would be over much quicker if you went to see a doctor! They can give you a antibiotic which will make the swelling go down and the infection go away. I know you are scared but they are nice people who want to help! In the meanwhile carry on taking paracetamol! Also try this; Mix half a lime, two teaspoons of honey and a little salt. It will help reduce inflammation! Hope this helps!

Cold or flu..?

We can’t reach the doctor until Monday, and it’s not serious enough to go to an urgent care facility, but I’m really wondering whether my son has the flu. I know it’s early in the season, but live-virus vaccines are being given in the grocery-store vaccine clinics in our area, so he has been exposed to people who are contagious with flu.

He’s 19. His symptoms have been: fever 101.5 to 102 degrees, much nose-blowing, some dry coughing, some sneezing, sinus and lung congestion (but that’s common with his asthma), lots of achiness, general tiredness, headache, and the whole post-nasal drip with the sore throat. He’s keeping food down, but doesn’t want to eat. No sense of smell or taste. Seems like half the symptoms from each possible illness. He’s been sick three days, and he’s so healthy that if this is a virus, it’s his first ever, so we’re new at this.

Hello – …. The symptoms you describe are that of a body that is engaged in ‘detoxing’. … Sneezing, coughing, nose blowing, congestion etc,.. All are signs of a body in the process of throwing off toxins. … In my opinion your sons body is doing some major ‘house cleaning’ work on it’self. …. And the best thing he can do for this is to support the body in doing the work that nature intended it to do when it has need to engage in house cleaning.
…. If he has little appetite this too is a very normal symptom of a body that is throwing off accumulated toxins. … Remember that if you have ever had any experience with pets such as a cat or dog etc. .. When an animal becomes ill,.. It will very often stop eating until it becomes well again. … This process is natures way of allowing the body to rest and focus it’s energies on cleaning out the toxins that need to be cleaned out of the body. If the body is still engaged in taking in food,.. Too much energy is brought to digesting and elimating foods and this does not allow the body to rest and do the healing work and cleaning out that it needs to do.

In my opinion,.. Your sons body needs to rest and take in plenty of the sort of fluids that will support it in the work it is presently engaged in. Such fluids might include the likes of fresh squeezed lemon juice in warm water. DO NOT ADD ANY SUGAR OR SWEETENER TO THIS!…. Do not feed your son any sugar or cold foods or drinks. …. He should also stay away from dairy foods of any sort,.. As these foods promote mucous in the body.

Pure Cranberry juice can be good, (this is not the likes of Ocean Spray Cranberry juice, which is loaded with sugar and other types of juice),.. I am referring to a pure straight cranberry juice that you will only find in a good health food store. It will taste very bitter but it is very good for the kidneys and the body in general.
You may find that this juice is more easily tolerated if you dilute it 50/50 with water.
… Otherwise you could give him herbal teas such as chamomile or some of the Yogi Tea herbal tea products that are designed to sooth the respiratory system. These products also can be found in a good health food store. …. If you can get him to take it,.. You could have him consume a crushed clove of garlic twice a day. This is a natural immune enhancer.

… Allow your son to rest as much as possible,..and when he starts feeling better,.. He can begin to eat whole fruit,.. Such as apples or prunes.
… He will get better as his body completes the work it is now egaged in.

Let me just give you one piece of advice… There is only one thing you need to know to get through anything in life: Make use of pain.

All this stress and pain and anger you feel, use that energy to make a change in your current situation, this is your life… You can sit back and bitch about or you can go out and do whatever you can to change it. If your grades were bad, you better work your ass off to get back into school and get the best grades you can. Why? Because its your life, and if you want to get anywhere or do anything valuable you got to work for it.

As for all this drama you are experiencing, in a few years your going to look back and laugh. Don’t let people bring you down and discover what inner power you have and focus it on improving your situation, if you try hard enough, it’ll happen.

Well the yeast infection will generally clear up itself. There is also medication that will help with the clearing up process. However, it is important to note that many untreated yeast infections progress normally and the body wonderfully clears up the condition on its own.
This is generally accomplished during the menstrual cycle. When menstruating the flow of blood raises the pH level within the vagina. This action minimizes the activity of the yeast cells because of their inability to grow in that pH environment.

Sometimes lymph nodes become swollen and indicate an infection present elsewhere in the body. For instance, if you have an infected cut or wound, or you have a blood infection, you may note lymph nodes become swollen throughout the body. Usually they are most swollen closest to the infection, if it’s on the skin. In some cases, autoimmune disorders mean lymph nodes become swollen more or less chronically. This is because the body turns on itself, and produces extra white blood cells to attack regular aspects of the body it views as foreign tissue. Typical autoimmune disorders like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or HIV may mean lymph nodes become swollen or remain swollen for long periods of time.

Now about the rash… You could very well just have dry skin. The weather is changing and skin tends to dry up during these cold months.

Sometimes you can think of things so much and just because of worry or stress you can make yourself sick. If it will ease your mind I would just get a second HIV test. Honestly i think you just have a bug like everyone else is getting due to the weather change, plus yeast infection just bad timing and dry skin is common during this season. Good Luck to you and hope you start feeling better soon. God Bless

Rodent Ulcer (Eosinophilic Ulcer) in my cat?

This morning my cat was lying next to me with his head tipped back and I noticed strange pink, mucousy sores on either side of his upper lip. I had no idea what to make of it, but I looked it up and learned they are rodent ulcers (more properly called Eosinophilic Ulcers), and are often found in cats. I know the cause of these strange sores can vary–feline leukemia is sometimes implied, but my cat was vaccinated for that a year and a half ago when I got him. However, he was a stray and I did not have him tested before vaccinating him. He is a robust, active, and healthy cat that is several years old, so I’m not entirely convinced that he could have had leukemia this whole time, although I’d appreciate someone filling me in on whether or not that is likely.

One thing that I have noticed is that he does get a cold maybe once or twice a year, something that doesn’t happen to my other cats. He gets somewhat lethargic and sneezy for a few days. Could this, along with the ulcers, imply some sort of immunodeficiency? Other that that, I cannot piece together why he might have this, unless it has to do with allergies (he is a mildly sneezy cat, even when he’s not sick). He has no flea issues (we use Frontline), and have been feeding him MeowMix since we got him. Would changing foods be wise? I have an appointment for the vet in two days, and my main concern is that the ulcers will worsen before then. I know that it is important to treat them early. Does anyone know how quickly they develop? So far, they can only be seen when I tip his head back to examine the underside of his lip, which is why I didn’t notice them til today. I have no idea how long they have been there.

Thanks so much…if anyone has had experience with these, I would appreciate your advice on what type of treatment has worked. Also, I will obviously see what the vet has to say when I see him on Thursday evening.
Thanks for the advice. I’ll do research on hypoallergenic cat food. I was under the impression that tests for feline leukemia and AIDS will always be positive once they have had the vaccine (and he’s had both). So is it therefore too late to test for them? Would there be other ways to tell?

admin answers:

I agree with the previous poster that allergy is a possibility. However changing to prescription food would not be the best idea. Most prescription foods are not very high in quality.

Cats develop allergies easily, and that’s because the food we’re feeding contains common allergens. Dry and commercial wet food is made with cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, soy and rice, all common allergens. Besides the allergy thing, grainis high in carbs and this contributes to developing feline diabetes and obesity.

Dry food is also not great for cats, because they are designed to get water from food. They have low thirst drives and will simply not drink enough to compensate the lack of moisture in dry. The lack of water can lead to kidney disease, UTI, crystals, renal failure and more.

Try switching your cat slowly to a all wet diet, high quality food. It should list muscle meat as first ingredient and should be grain-free. No By-product. You can find these in pet stores with Wellness, EVO, Merrick, Nature’s Variety and more. This will give your cat the proper nutrition and hydration and will be less likely to cause allergy.

Also try to go for flavors that are based on meat your cat has not eaten before, maybe lamb, rabbit etc. Cats can develop allergies even to specific meats.

Here’s some info on nutrition and how it impacts your cat’s health.

Good luck!

Ok so! Past 2 weeks I had pregnancy symtoms.. cramping… eatng a lot.. headaches everyday… Sore nipples and always tired and excessive amount of White discharge. I figured it would just be too early to tell. Well I went to the doctors this past Thursday! and got a blood test done.. Still have not heard anything.. How long do they normally take? By monday they should have results? I just tested myself again with the dollar store tests and AGAIN negative… Now I am beginning to think I am just over thinking i am pregnant and most likely not. I am confused… Do you trust dollar store tests? i read on them and people seem to say that work. I also Am being treated for a bad cold.. On antibiotics and a puffer and nasel spray.. Could this maybe cause some symptoms? Also found my Vitamin D level is So low.. that I need to take vitamins.. Help me out here.. I know I should just wait till tomorrow to here the blood test results… but what if thats negative..? are blood results That accurate ??? I did some thinking and i may only be 2 weeks pregnant… Or i could have gotten pregnant 2 months ago…. explains why my last period was 2 days and light..
Oh I want to drink and have fun with friends.. but i know its not worth the risk! Should I wait? Or go with the negative dollar store test and drink

I keep getting sick with various different types of infections. Could they be related?

Starting November ’07 – I had strep throat for the first time – treated with antibiotics.

In January ’08 – I had what felt like a sinus infection – never saw doctor

In March ’08 I had Trichomoniasis- My partner and I were treated with antibiotics

In May ’08 I had what felt like a horrible sinus infection – Never went to doctor

At the end of May ’08 I had a Urinary Tract infection – treated with over the counter medicine

In June ’08 I had my first yeast infection – Doctor had me take over the counter monistat.

September ’08 – I had another yeast infection – treated with monistat again

In October ’08 I found out I was deficient in B12, but since have been taking it and many of the symptoms that led to this diagnosis have disappeared. I assumed that was the cause of getting sick so frequently.

In late October I had the worst head cold ever and it could have been a sinus infection. I never saw the doctor.

In November I was diagnosed with another Strep B vaginal infection. It was treated with antibiotics again.

In early December I had a very strange thing happen and a lot of my lymphnodes swelled up horribly. I felt healthy except it was very painful and the doctor gave me some antibiotics. About 4 days into the antibiotics my throat got horribly sore and I felt like I had strep throat again. This lasted about 4 days and then the sore throat went away but I had a lot of chest and nasal congestion. I don’t think it was an infection because the mucous drained but it was always clear. My lymphnodes remained swollen during all of this, but slowly went back to normal. The antibiotics seemed to have no effect on this and this whole episode lasted about 3 weeks.

Now I sit here very uncomfortable after taking a at home urinary tract infection test that came up incredibly positive.

So, I will call my doctor and get some more antibiotics. I just don’t think it is good to take this many antibiotics. Is there something else that could be leading to all these illnesses. Can they be related? I realized that my gynecologist who treated the vaginal infections has no idea that I keep getting sinus infections, colds, etc. Then I realized my general practitioner has no idea about all the bacteria, UTI, yeast infections. I never really considered they could be related some how, so never thought to bring it up. I have had blood tests and the only abnormal thing was my B12 levels. I had horrible b12 deficiency symptoms which is what let to that diagnosis and I notice that even though they have pretty much disappeared, I feel them when I am sick. My joints start cracking, my arms start hurting, My legs cramp and my toes tingle. I can’t concentrate and feel cloudy. I get better for a week and feel normal again, then some other illness comes along and I feel the symptoms again.

If the B12 deficiency was killing my immune system and leading to all these infections, than why hasn’t my immune system gotten stronger by taking b12?

Hey!
It is very important to protect and cover the affected area with a protective petroleum based product such as petroleum jelly (vaseline!). This can both speed up the healing process and protect the area from further infections.

Drink lots of fluids! Drinking lots of water and juices (not citrus ones) helps:)

Applying ice can slow down the metabolism of the virus (especially in the initial stages) to prevent severe outbreak, and can also numb the area to lessen pain and itching

Teabag application. Applying teabags are quite effective in speeding up the healing process. Tannic acid in tea has strong antiviral properties.

Herbs such as aloe Vera, tea tree oil, witch hazel and sage have been discovered to speed up the healing process of cold sores.

Hope this helps… Ive given you some simple remedies, try most of them:) it helped me!

I’ve found the key to stopping cold sores is to act early – as soon as you feel the tingle, get on top of it with treatment. In addition to the previous poster’s recommendation of lysine tablets, search for a food chart that compares Arginine and Lysine and look at the ratios — if you have a diet high in Arginine (steak & walnuts), I’ve found balancing that with Lysine tablets (or even better, foods high in Lysine – dairy, etc) works wonders to stop the virus in early replication. Though I’m not convinced by the non-medical literature on the web as to why this works, in my experience it does indeed work – and I’m happy enough with that when I have one.

I’ve found myself in places without lysine tablets at hand, so have just opted for as much yogurt as I can stand until I get back to the house / store to get lysine tablets.

Once you have a full blown cold sore in massive replication, most times there’s not much to do than wait it out – of course trying everything under the sun to keep it clean (secondary infection/inflammation just makes them worse) and pain free (I’ve found ice & asprin a good relief).

I’ve found pharmaceuticals such as Valtrex speed the cycle – replication (growth), drying, healing – helpful once the cold sore is visible and definitely on it’s way. But lysine can actually stop the cold sore in it’s tracks – you’ll feel the tingling stop w/in a few hours – I typically start with an initial 1000-2000 mg and then keep taking 500mg-1000mg every half day until I’m confident it’s gone.

Good luck – and remember – 15-30% of people in the US suffer – so try to keep your head up!

My cold sores always lasted about 2-3 weeks but now when i feel one coming on i take 1/2 a pill a day and it lasts about a week or less.
There are also over the counter balms that you can get from walmart or a drug store.

Discovery could lead to cold sore cure
Last Updated: Wednesday, July 2, 2008 | 3:25 PM ET Comments21Recommend87CBC News
Now that researchers have found how cold sores operate, they believe they may soon discover how to eradicate the virus that causes them.

Cold sores, which usually show up as painful, ulcerated blemishes around the mouth, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV1). The virus often lies dormant in a nerve in the face, called the trigeminal nerve, until activated by sunlight, a poorly functioning immune system, stressful situations or a high fever.

By examining the interplay of various molecular substances the virus produces, researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., have found how it hides and then emerges periodically.

One such substance is called latency associated transcript RNA, which the study reveals blocks the formation of proteins that “turn” on the virus and make it replicate. It does this by splitting into strands of microRNAs, which essentially keep the virus in check.

However, in stressful situations, the virus makes more messenger RNA than the microRNAs can handle and eventually viral replication occurs.

“We have provided a molecular understanding of how HSV1 hides and then switches back and forth between the latent [hidden] and active phases,” Bryan Cullen, Duke professor of molecular genetics and microbiology, said in a release.

The researchers believe this discovery could lead to a treatment in which the artificial activation of the virus would lead it to be killed by administering acyclovir, a medication that kills replicating HSV1. The virus cannot be treated while in a dormant state.

“In principle, you could activate and then kill all of the virus in a patient,” said Cullen. “This would completely cure a person, and you would never get another cold sore.”

The study is published in the June issue of the journal Nature.

admin answers:

Don’t stay away from your baby. The ‘virus’ that you have caught, your son would have been exposed to long before you even knew you had caught it. The ‘virus’ was already in your system long before you noticed any symptoms.
Just breathing the same air as you would expose him.

If your wife is breast feeding, the antibodies she is giving him will help him fight the virus.
If she’s not breast feeding (and giving formula) he will still get the exposure from when he was around you (and when she was around you, I’m sure she was exposed to the virus as well.)
Sometimes a virus can take up to a week (of being in your system) before you see any symptoms at all.

Go give that baby a hug! Don’t ‘stay away’ from him! He needs his Daddy! (whether you’re sick or not

admin answers:

Cold sores will heal depending on several things, one being your body’s immune system and how revved up it is. Another being what you might use to speed the process. Over the counter there are several products available, my personal favorite is Abreva, pricey but effective. By perscription, there is Valtrex, or zovirax. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus which lives dormant in your nervous system for life. Various things can trigger an outbreak in various people, from too much sun to particular foods, most learn fairly quickly what they need to avoid to minimize outbreaks.
You begin to shed the virus approximately one week before the sore/s show up, and you continue to shed the virus for three weeks after the sore has completely healed before it goes dormant until the next outbreak. So you can never really know when you are or are not contagious, so the recommendation is to not participate in oral sex at all, if you know you get cold sores, because while you are shedding the virus you can transmit it to your partner’s genitalia during oral sex and then it becomes genital herpes, something your partner is not likely to thank you for.

Wait about 3-5 days after the cold sore has healed. Right after it heals you could still be able to pass it on due to some thing called viral shedding. When you have absolutely no signs of a cold sore it’s safer to kiss and give oral sex.

A cold sore, Herpes virus simplex goes through three stages as it nears the end of it’s cycle, you can reinfect by breaking the blister and rubbing it on your lips so, keep your hands away from your mouth.
Once the initial blister is gone and it starts to dry then you shouldn’t have to worry about it spreading. They take about ten days to heal.

The Problem of a Cold Sore

Almost everyone has experienced the pain and embarrassment of a cold sore. They just seem to pop up at the most inopportune times. The fact is, there is a reason for when cold sores appear. The virus that causes cold sores hides at the ends of human nerves. When we are under stress or catching flu and colds we are most susceptible to having a painful cold sore activate.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. The type that causes cold sores is the simplex type one. Some people call cold sores fever blisters, which is not medically correct. A cold sore normally appears on the lips or area around the mouth and lower part of the nose. It can be visible and painful for one full week or slightly longer, in some cases.

According to Western medicine, cold sores cannot be cured. Medicine practiced in other parts of the world disagree. There are things you can do to avoid getting cold sores. It is also possible to reduce the size and pain of any cold sore that strikes when you least expect it.

I have found one effective treatment whenever I get a cold sore and that is the Lipzor (Virulite) for Cold Sore Machine.

Where to buy Lipzor Cold Sore Machine

Stress and a Cold Sore

The main thing that activates a cold sore is stress. Since stress causes the human immune system to lose effectiveness, taking steps that keep the immune system as high as possible, are very important. A strong immune system is the best protection against an unexpected cold sore.

To help strengthen your immune system, there are some specific things you can do. Look up the benefits of including the spice Turmeric into your diet. You may be wary, because of all the things that Turmeric is credited with helping reduce or cure.

There is a reason for the importance of Turmeric to human health. This spice is anti-inflammatory and builds strength in the immune system. Some people, who take turmeric regularly, report a drastic reduction of colds and flu incidents. Some people believe in Turmeric so strongly they prepare a drink of turmeric power mixed with honey and tea, every morning of their life.

Another substance that helps strengthen the human immune system is zinc. You can use zinc lozenges as a source of this mineral. Together with turmeric in your diet, zinc lozenges will build your immune system into a power house defense, against many types of diseases. Other things you can do to strengthen the immune systems are based on avoiding stress. Things like yoga, meditation, and light exercise are great stress busting activities.

Remedies for a Cold Sore

If you do get a cold sore, here are some remedies to lessen the pain and shorten the time you must endure the situation. It is always a good idea to cover a cold sore. Even better is to cover it with a salve that will hide the sore from the sun. This will speed healing and protect the sore, and your health, from an infection with bacteria. Never hide your cold sore with makeup because unknown chemicals in the makeup can aggravate the cold sore.

Any over the counter ointment with benzocaine can help make the area with the cold sore a bit numb. For some people, over the counter pain medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen can provide pain relief. These can help take away the pain.

Make sure you are careful not to touch the sore at any time. Cold sores are contagious to other people and to other areas of your mouth. Change your toothbrush and never share lipstick or make up when you have a cold sore.

This Virulite cold sore treatment machine is brilliant. I had the first version of this Virulite cold sore treatment machine for 5 years before it stopped working. This Virulite device really works, forget the creams, if you catch the cold sore early you can stop it altogether, if you already got a cold sore it will stop it’s progress and half the time it takes to go away. Get one it really works.
Virulite cold sore and herpes simplex machine review by Bobby Lall (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Virulite Cold Sores Machine (Personal Care)
Every year I used to dread February as I knew I would get a cold sore. Obviously like most cold sore sufferers you try everything under the sun, excuse the pun. I stumbled across this Virulite product by the usual “cold sore cures” via google. So decided to give it a go; February has come and gone and I had 1 potential cold sore flare up which I immediately “attacked” with the Virulite. I thought that it was a coincidence\luck when it didn’t flare up at all. I was absolutely chuffed. I felt a tingling again (march 2010) and a tiny blister appeared – done the Virulite and within 1 day it’s gone. BUY THIS PRODUCT IF YOU SUFFER FROM COLDSORES – it’s the best thing I’ve used. Pain free, no mess easy to use. Brilliant Cold Sore Machine
Virulite review by elp. This review is from: Virulite Cold Sores Machine (Personal Care)
I have been a sufferer of dreaded cold sores for a few years and not just small little blisters but whenever I got one I couldnt go out in public. Quite literally my mouth would blow up and I looked disfigured (really my nearest and dearest confirmed it!). Every holiday or night away I would worry to whether I would develop a cold sore which plagued me for years. I tried everything on the market included prescription medicine and nothing seemed to really help that much. I read a newspaper article about this Virulite machine and the success of the clinical trial about 5 years ago and ordered one. I have been overwhelmed with how amazing the Virulite Cold Sores Machine is. I have been cold sores free for 3 years now (touch wood) and if I ever feel the tingle I use the Virulite Cold Sores machine and nothing comes up. I will be eternally grateful for the invention of this machine and more people should know about it!

Vegan alternative to carmex for cold sores?

I get cold sores (at least I think they’re cold sores), and they stay forEVER. I hate them.

I used to use carmex.

Then I went vegan.

And then I started getting cold sores. (I don’t even know how. I don’t share drinks, and I’ve never been kissed. Ugh. Way to reward a teen for innocent behavior.)

But I’d like to get rid of them… because now I have three. One is almost gone, but I’ve had it for two weeks. Another one is leaving, but I just got a new one yesterday…

Help?
Somebody asked what’s not vegan about carmex.

Carmex, like most chapstick-related things, has lanolin in it. Lanolin comes from sheep.
Someone else said that lanolin/shearing sheep does not hurt the sheep. With nice farmers, that is probably the case. But commercial wool and most lanolin probably come from not so animal-friendly sources. I read somewhere that the workers sheer the sheep as quickly as possible–they’re paid for how much they sheer, not how long they work. And their haste results in the sheep getting hurt. I know that sheering sheep is just like getting a haircut–but if the people doing the sheering are careless, the sheep get cut.

A relative has dealt with cold sores throughout his entire life (that must suck as a kid), but he hasn’t had one since he started using tea tree oil to treat blemishes. Although he’s not sure if he can officially thank the oil, he applied it whenever he felt that telltale tingling and nothing ever appeared.
Purchase an over-the-counter cold sore treatment as soon as you feel the tingling that indicates a cold sore is imminent. The treatment should contain docosonal or benzyl alcohol and will typically be packaged in gel or cream form. Abreva and Zilactin are common over-the-counter products that you can purchase at any drugstore or pharmacy. Then wash your hands, lips and face with warm water and soap and dry with clean towel.
Apply a small amount of the cold sore treatment directly onto the cold sore on your lips and the surrounding area. You may use your finger or a cotton swab. Rub the gel or cream in thoroughly and avoid licking your lips as much as possible.
Wash your hands thoroughly after touching your cold sore. Avoid kissing other people and especially avoid contact with young children or elderly people. A cold sore is very contagious and can be spread easily.
Visit your doctor if your cold sore does not go away after two weeks or if you have a severe outbreak. Your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to treat your cold sore.

Yes it could be a cold sore, a cold sore is HSV1 and herpes are called HSV2 Both virus types can cause lip and mouth sores (herpes labialis) and genital herpes if your skin comes into contact with either type.Cold sores are blisters on the lips and the edge of the mouth. A picture would be helpful, but the sites listed below will explain what a cold sore is and the bottom sites have pics of cold sores. You can compare yours to the pics decide for yourself. If you do have a cold sore there is no cure for the virus, but there are treatments that could help with itching and other discomfort of a cold sore. Personally I use carmex, there is a brand called abriva it is suppose to help cure a cold sore faster, I have tried it and have found it to be no better then carmex, only triple the cost. If you do have a cold sore, do not squeeze it as this can cause the infection to spread and you will have a lot more sores.HSV-1 is responsible for only 5-10% of genital herpes cases, while HSV-2 causes the majority of genital herpes cases. Not every person that has HSV 1 has HSV 2!!

How long does it take a Cold Sore to heal?

Alright, I’m trying not to panic right now, but I have to admit, I’m under a lot of stress. Not only do my finals start TOMORROW (and I feel completely over-whelmed), I also have my university’s ring ceremony on Tuesday – and my school makes a big deal out of it. It really is a huge family and friends event. (Don’t ask me why it is in the middle of finals though). However, when I woke up this morning I felt the tale-tell tingle on my upper lip and immediately took a capsule of 200MG of Acyclovir and put 50MG of Acyclovir topical ointment on the sore directly. I have been continuously re-applying the ointment throughout the day and just took my third dose of the oral medication. (I can take it up to 4 times a day).

So, with this regiment, on average, how long does a cold sore take to heal? This is my first time using oral medication to treat cold sores, so I have no idea what to expect. I am hoping it will be cleared up by Tuesday. =(
Wow, honestly only one person sounds like they even read my question. I’m ALREADY doing stuff to take care of it – and I didn’t ask anything about curing it, since I know there is no cure. I’ve gotten these my whole life, but I’ve never taken an ORAL medication (only topical) – thanks to those who actually read my question and given me an appropriate response.

Based on your medical info – if you were able to stop the sore before it broke through the skin, it should clear up within 3 days. One thing you do not want to do it over use the topical medication to the point of irritation. You can also use Hydro-cortisone as a healing agent. Tea tree oil is a wonderful preventative also when you start to feel that ‘tingle’.

Remember, please, a cold sore is Herpes Simplex I – or a single sore, which CAN be transmitted to other individuals lips, eyes, and private areas. This was one of the ‘I wish I had known that before…’, I heard over and over again.

Herpes simplex is a nasty little bugger that is transmittable during any stage of its explosion. From that first little tingle, first bit of swelling , through the blister and especially when its open. You should wait until it has been healed over for a full week before you participate in kissing and the likes. Don’t even share a cigarette or a straw until then. Keep it to yourself ! By the way…it never goes away ! It can sit dormant for a long time between break outs. Don’t think you’re cured cause it healed over. IT NEVER GOES AWAY !

Eventually it turned into what I believe is a Cold Sore. Should I wash it with hot-soapy water like once a day, put ice on it, or continue with the proactiv refining mask treatment? People say ice really helps, but people also usually say the hotter the better, but then why should I use ice if that’s the case?

How do I tell the difference from a pimple, zit, a little blip or the start of a cold sore?

I have a small bump on the corner by my lip, on my skin (not my lip.) it doesn’t itch or burn; I didn’t notice it until I was putting foundation on (it isn’t red.)
It’s just a little bump, but if it’s a cold sore (which would be odd because I don’t think I’ve ever had one before) I want to treat it before it gets too bad.
How do I tell? What is it?

Virulite cold sore treatment review by Bored With It Now
This review is from: Virulite Cold Sore Machine (Personal Care) This Virulite cold sore treatment machine is brilliant. DD 5.0 out of 5 stars Virulite Cold sores machine, 17 Mar 2010
Virulite cold sore and herpes simplex machine review by Bobby Lall (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Virulite Cold Sores Machine (Personal Care) Every year I used to dread February as I knew I would get a cold sore. BUY THIS PRODUCT IF YOU SUFFER FROM COLD SORES – it’s the best thing I’ve used. Pain free, no mess easy to use. Virulite review by G. J. Davies (REAL NAME) This review is from: Virulite Cold Sore Machine (Personal Care) Within a few days of receiving this Virulite Cold Sore Treatment and Cold Sore Remedies product I developed a cold sore blister below my lip. I used the Virulite cold sore machine a couple of times a day for about three days and found after about a week there was no sign of the cold sore. Having used creams and taken tablets for many years I think that this Virulite Cold Sore Treatment and Cold Sore Remedies machine will be an absolute boon.5.0 out of 5 stars Virulite is a life and face saver!, 16 April 2011
Virulite review by elp. This review is from: Virulite Cold Sores Machine (Personal Care) I have been a sufferer of dreaded cold sores for a few years and not just small little blisters but whenever I got one I couldnt go out in public.
